Join Richmond band Glows in the Dark as they delve into brand new territory. Inspired by the Italian Crime films of the 1970’s, Glows will present 2 solid sets of grooves taken from these films in a format that’s very new to the band. Playing in front of a backdrop of sex and violence from these films, they will treat the material as a DJ would—-transitioning seamlessly between grooves to keep the people dancing. Dancing? That’s right, Glows will leave behind their free form experimentation, in order to properly keep the crowd moving, and honor the great Italian groovesmiths of yore! This is an exciting time for Glows, presenting this show for the second time at Balliceaux, and adding guests to help the band do it right. Glows will add Lauren Serpa on flute, and special vocals from Eddie Prendergast and Lydia Ooghe on a few deep cuts! In addition, the great SnowPanda will DJ before the gig and keep everyone grooving between sets!

Join us for this special showcase of RVA talent!

Presenting John Lilley! 8.31.08 mp3s

10 09 2008

So the first official show with John Lilley as the new Glow went really well.  We brought more people to Commercial Taphouse then ever before.  We even had bros and bathroom-sharing sorority girls that were standing right next to us (and in front of the recording mic.)  So I apologize in advance if the second set of the show is marred with conversations about Dave Matthews, that girls’s outfit, popped collars, or cocaine.  Actually they were super cool, and really dug the music, going so far as to all dance during a Scott Burton/Scott Clark free jazz explosion!  It was sweet.

This show was also great because we premiered a new piece called My Name is Cameron Vale, which is based around the David Cronenberg film Scanners.  The movie has themes of mental over-load which I tried to work into the music, making this song officially the hardest song we play!  I hated for that to be the first new tune Lilley had to learn, but he sounded great on it, and I was the only one that screwed it up (just a little…honest.)  It’s all about this crazy ass beat that Scott Clark plays.  It’s in 4 I promise.

I was also able to work out a new deal at Taphouse, so luckily that wasn’t our last gig there!

For anyone thats taking notes, here is the evidence of our drummer’s ongoing heroism and creativity. This is page 2 from his “written” part for the song Security Lock. We have a few versions of the song in the Archive, and it’s pretty obvious that if he wasn’t the shit, it wouldn’t work out so well (or at all).

His other band, the amazing Ilad is featured as part of the RVANews Eight Track Competition. Go vote for them!
